Is ón Rinn, i nGaeltacht na nDéise do Sheáin Ó Fearghail.

Thosaigh sé ar an bhfidil sa bhunscoil agus níorbh fhada gur phioc sé suas an consairtín chomh maith. D’fhreastail sé ar go leor ceardlanna ceoil thimpeall na tíre cosúil le Scoil Samhradh Willie Clancy agus bhí an-tionchar ag an gceol a chuala sé ann ar a chuid seinnt. D’éist sé le ceoltóirí mar Tommy Peoples, Matt Molloy, Martin Hayes, Noel Hill agus Bobby Gardiner.

Bhain sé máistreacht amach ón roinn cheoil in Ollscoil Luimnigh i 2010.

Beidh na ceardlanna ar siúl san Ionad Cultúrtha agus i gColáiste Ghobnatan, óna 10.00 go dtína 12.30 maidin Dé Sathairn 04 Nollaig 2021.

Seán Ó Fearghail is from the Rinn Gaeltacht in Waterford.

He started playing the fiddle in primary school but it wasn’t long before he began to play the concertina as well. He has attended many music workshops around the country amongst them Scoil Shamhraidh Willie Clancy and was greatly influenced by the music he heard. He has listened to such musicians as Tommy Peoples, Matt Molloy, Martin Hayes, Noel Hill and Bobby Gardiner. 

He obtained his Masters from the Music Department in UL in 2010.

Workshops take place in the Ionad Cultúrtha and in Coláiste Ghobnatan from 10.00 to 12.30 on Saturday morning 4th of December.

Paudie O Connor – Éigse 2021

Is boscadóir ó cheantar Shliabh Luachra é Paudie O Connor. Leanann a stíl traidisiún Shliabh Luachra le tionchair óna leithead de Phádraig Uí Chaoimh,  Denis Murphy agus na boscadóirí áitiúla cosúil le Johnny O Leary, Jimmy Doyle agus John Brosnan.

Sa bhliain 2005 sheol sé an ceirnín Different State a roghnaigh ‘The Irish Times’ agus ‘The Irish Echo’ mar rogha na bliana ó thaobh na gceirníní traidisiúnta de. Tá dhá cheirnín eile aige – Wind and Reeds leis an bpíobaire John O Brien agus Didn’t She Dance and Dance a sheol sé lena chéile, an fidléir Aoife Ní Chaoimh.

Seinneann agus múineann sé ag na féilte ceoil ar fud na tíre go rialta – Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy agus The Gathering san áireamh.

Tá roinnt taifead déanta aige do chláracha teilifíse, ina measc HUP, Geantraí agus TradFest TG4. Bhí sé mar láithreoir don chlár Geantraí nuair a taifeadadh é in Oileán Chiarraí sa bhliain 2014.

Paudie O Connor is a box player from Sliabh Luachra who follows the traditional Sliabh Luachra style and was influenced by the likes of Padraig Ó Caoimh,Denis Murphy and by local box players such as Johnny O Leary, Jimmy Doyle and John Brosnan.

In 2005 he launched the record “Different State” which was chosen by the Irish Times and Evening Echo as traditional record of the year. He has two other recordings “Wind and Reeds” with the piper John O Brien and “Didn’t she Dance and Danca with his wife ,the fiddler Aoife Ní Chaoimh.

He regularly plays and performs at various festivals during the year, among them “Scoil Shamhraidh Willie Clancy” and “The Gathering”.

He has  done some recordings for television programmes, Hup, Geantraí  and Tradfest on TG4 and was also a presenter for the programme “Geantraí” when it was recorded in Castleisland in 2004.

Workshops take place in the Ionad Cultúrtha and in Coláiste Ghobnatan from 10.00 to 12.30 on Saturday morning 4th of December.

Megan Nic Fhionnghaile – Éigse 2021

Is fiddléir ó Ghaoth Dobhair í Mégan, áit ina bhfuil  ceol traidisiúnta agus an ghaoluinn go laidir ann. Bhí sí timpeallaithe ag an gceol agus amhránaíocht is í ag fás aníos. Fiddléir aitheanta ab ea a sin-sheanathair, Joe Jack agus bhí amhráin go tiúbh ag a seanmháthair agus a deirfiúracha.

Tá Megan ag freastal ar Ollscoil Luimní agus tá an triú bhliain ag staidéar Ceol na hÉireann criochnaithe aici. I 2019 bhuaigh sí craobh Uladh sa chomórtas fidil agus ghlac sí páirt I gcraobh Fleadh na hÉireann. Bíonn sí gníomhach ag seinmt ag féilte agus seisiúin ceoil ar fud na tíre agus tá taithí aici bheith ag múineadh ina pobal áitiúil.

Megan Nic Fhionnghaile is a fiddle player from Gaoth Dobhair, a region celebrated for its traditional Irish music and the Irish Language. Growing up, she was surrounded with songs and music from her- her great-grandad, Joe Jack being a well known fiddle player of the area and her Grandmother and her siblings being singers.

Megan attends the University of Limerick and has just finished her third year studying Irish Music there. In 2019 she was the Ulster champion in senior fiddle and was a finalist in the All Ireland Fleadh. She is active performing at festivals and sessions around Ireland and has teaching experience in her local community.

Clíodhna Costello – Éigse 2021

Is ó Thuaisceart Thiobrad Árainn,áit a bhfuil traidisiún saibhir cheoil í Clíodhna. Thosnaigh sí ag foghlaim an piano agus feadóg stáin ina óige agus ina dhiaidh san an banjo. D’fhoghlaim sí mór chuid go luath óna bheith ag éisteacht le leithéidí Jody Moran,John Carty,John Morrow agus Brian McGrath.

Tá árd mheas ar stíl rithimiúil Chlíodhna, agus tá mór chuid duaiseanna bainte amach aici. Tá sí tar éis bheith ar chláracha theilifíse agus raidió agus tá sí tar éis ana chuid taisteal a dheanamh timpeall an domhain, ag glacadh páirt I gCoirmeacha agus ag múineadh ceoil. Maireann sí in Oirthear na Gaillimhe, áit a bhíonn sí ag múineadh agus ag seinmt ceoil.

Clíodhna Costello hails from North Tipperary, an area rich in traditional music.  She was immersed in music at a young age, both at home among her siblings, and with local musicians, the likes of Paddy O’Brien, his daughter Eileen, the Larkins, O’Connors and Slatterys to name but a few. She started learning piano and whistle at a young age and quickly progressed to the banjo.  She learned much early on from listening to the likes of Jody Moran, John Carty, John Morrow and Brian McGrath.

Clíodhna’s rhythmic style is widely admired, and she has won numerous awards for her playing. She has appeared on television and radio shows at home in Ireland and has travelled across the world, performing and teaching throughout Europe, the US and as far afield as New Zealand. Clíodhna currently lives in East Galway, where she plays and teaches regularly.

Workshops take place in the Ionad Cultúrtha and in Coláiste Ghobnatan from 10.00 to 12.30 on Saturday morning 4th of December.

Catherine McEvoy – Éigse 2021

Rugadh Catherine I mBirmingham. B’as Ros Comáin dá tuismitheoirí.

Tá stíl fliutadóireacht Catherine préamahithe I stíl Tuaisceart Chonnachta agus bhí tionchar ag ceoltóirí dá leithéid Josie McDermott, Seamus Tansey, Roger Sherlock agus Matt Molloy uirthi.

 Bronnadh Gradam Ceoltóir Traidisiúnta na Bliana TG4 uirthi I 2019. Tháinig si chun cónaithe in Éirinn I 1997.

 Bhí sí mar bhall don ghrúpa iomráiteach ban“Macalla”.

Tá dhá thaifeadadh aonair déanta aici ar lipéad Cló Iar Chonnachta, “Music in  the Sligo Roscommon Style” ( 1996), agus “The Home Ruler” 2007.

Is teagascóir sinsear í ag Scoil Shamhraidh Willie Clancy agus ag Féilte eile ar fuid na tíre. Tá mór chuid turasanna déanta aici thar lear go háirithe Na Stáit Aontaithe agus an Eoraip. Le déanaí I 2020 sheinm si san Astráil agus an Nua Shéalainn.

Catherine McEvoy was born in Birmingham to Roscommon parents.Her style of flute playing is rooted in North Connaught having been influenced by players such as Josie McDermott, Seamus Tansey, Roger Sherlock, Matt Molloy.  Catherine was awarded the TG4 Gradam Ceoil Traditional Musician in 2019.

Catherine came to live in Ireland in 1977 and joined the vibrant revival of traditional music happening at that time. Catherine was a member of the  ground breaking first all female group Macalla. 

A senior tutor at the Willie Clancy Summer School in Co. Clare, Catherine is also a regular performer and teacher at many other Festivals around  Ireland, the USA and Europe. She toured Australia and New Zealand in March 2020. 

 Catherine has two solo recordings,  “ Music in the Sligo Roscommon Style” (CIC) released in 1996 and “The Home Ruler” (2007).  Catherine  also features on a number of compilation albums and has a duet recording with her brother John McEvoy the well known fiddler player.

 Catherine McEvoy toured for the Arts Council of Ireland and also the Arts council of Northern Ireland with fellow musicians Mícheál Ó Raghallaigh (Concertina), Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh (fiddle). 

Catherine has been a major influence on many of today’s young flute players, being one of the first female traditional flute players to release a solo recording.

Is cúis mhór áthais dúinn go  reachtálfar Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin beo beathaitheach  imbliana. Beidh sé ar siúl I nGaeltacht Mhúscraí ón Aoine 3ú lá  go dti an Domhnach an 5ú lá de mhí na Nollag.

I mbliana beimíd ag comóradh 30 bliain ó cailleadh Diarmuidín go tragóideach I 1991.

 Bhí cáil agus meas ar Dhiarmuidín as feabhas agus stíl a chuid amhránaíochta agus an cumas a bhí ann a leagan féin a dhéanamh d’amhráin agus go háirithe a repertoire d’amhráin aitiúla Múscraíoch. 

Bhíodh Diarmuidín ag obair mar mhúinteóir tráth agus ba chraoltóir é le RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta . Déanfar bronnadh speisialta ar RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, Baile na nGall in aitheantas don chuid seo dá shaol.

Tagann amhránaithe, ceoltóirí agus mórchuid cuairteoirí, le chéile gach bliain as gach ceann den tír chun an amhránaíocht agus an ceol dúchais a chleachtadh I dteannta le Muintir Mhúscraí. 

Tá áthas orainn imbliana go mbeidh aíonna spesialta againn ón Albain, a bhuíochas san d’Iomairt Cholmcille agus Foras na Gaeilge. Beidh siad ag tabhairt cuairt ar na scoileanna áitiúla agus I gcomhair le Scéim Amhránaíochta Aisling Gheal, beidh siad ag múineadh amhráin gaoluinne na hAlbain dos na daltaí agus ag foghlaim amhráin áitiúla chomh maith.

Éigse Dhiarmuid Ui Shúilleabháin  
2021 3rd to the 5th December.

We are delighted to announce that Éigse Dhiarmuid Ui Shúilleabháin will take place as a live event this year. It will be held in the Múscraí  Gaeltacht from Friday the 3rd of December to Sunday the 5th of December.

This year we will be commemorating the 30th anniversary of Diarmuidín’s tragic death .Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin was very well known for his unique singing style and his versions of many renowned songs  from the Múscraí area .He was among many other things , a teacher and a journalist who worked for RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Special recognition will be given to this aspect of his life when a presentation will be made to RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Baile na nGall at the opening  on Friday night.

Singer, musicians and people who enjoy traditional singing and music come from all over the country and indeed from abroad  every year to celebrate the unique culture of the Múscraí area.

 We are delighted this year to welcome a special group of Gaelic speakers and singers from Scotland thanks to the sponsorship of Iomairt Cholmcille and Foras na Gaeilge. They will be visiting the local schools and in Partnership with Scéim Amhránaíochta Aisling Gheal will be teaching some gaelic songs and indeed learning some of the local songs.

Muireann Ní Dhuigneáin  will open the Éigse on Friday night and afterwards a special presentation will be made to RTÉ Raidio na Gaeltachta Baile na nGall in memory of their colleague Diarmuidín. We will then have a performance from our visitors from Albain and local schoolchildren. Finishing the night in Áras Éamonn Mac Suibhne will be a launch of a book and cd by Acadamh Fódhla Cnuasach Amhráin Ó Mhúscraighe.

 The night will finish with a session in the Mills Inn.

Saturday 4th of December will have an earlier start with Siúlóid Cuimhneacháin Síle Ni Shúilleabháin  at 9.30, starting off from the forestry park.

We will have nine workshops this year in Coláiste Ghobnatan and Ionad Cultúrtha  Dochtúir Ó Loingsigh,from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm-

After lunch we will have a lecture in the Ionad Cultúrtha with Deirdre Ní Chonghaile Gabhtar fonn le fonn:bailiú an cheoil dúchais.

We will have a great evening of music after that, firstly with Keelan McGrath and Gearóid MacNamara in the Top Of Coom and afterwards with Siún Ní Ghlacáin and her friends in Scannells bar in the village.

Our gala concert hosted by Doireann Ní Ghlacáin will take place in Áras Éamonn Mac Suibhne at 8.00 that evening. All the tutors who taught at the workshop earlier will take part along with Keelan McGrath and Gearóid MacnaMara, our visitors from Scotland, Danny Maidhcí Ó Súilleabhain, John Kelly, Éamonn McGivney and Peadar Ó Riada and of course Cór Chúil Aodha.

Afterwards there will be a singing session in the Mills Inn with Máire Ni Chéilleachair as Bean A Tí and a music session in the Abbey Hotel.

 On Sunday mass will be celebrated  with Cór Chuil Aodha under the guidance of Peadar Ó Riada  which will be live on Raidió na Gaeltachta.

We are in for a treat afterwards at the Éigse Recital in the old Church in Reilig Ghobnatan, with Danny Maidhcí Ó Súilleabháin, Diarmuid and Éamonn Ó Meachair.

We are delighted that we will have great music with Jimmy Doyle and friends playing in the Abbey Hotel in the afternnon and should have a fine evening of singing in the Top of Coom with Eibhlín Ui Thuama as Bean a Ti.

So if you want to have a great weekend of traditional music and song and great company make your way to Éigse Dhiarmuid Ui Shúilleabháin 2021.

I mí Eanair 1936 saolaíodh Seán Ó Sé I mBéal Átha Lice in Iarthar Chorcaí,mar ar togadh le Geilge é. Oidí bunscoile ab ea a thuistí. Amhranaí brea ab ea a athair, agus bhí cáil ar uncail leis mar amhranaí ar an sean-nós.

Cáilíodh é mar oide bunscoile agus tosnaigh sé ag freastal ar ranganna guth oiliúnaí I Scoil Cheoil Chorcaí I 1956.Le linn an ama seo, mhéadaigh sé réimse a ghutha agus mhúin John T Horne dhó conas a ghuth a úsáid agus a chaomhnú.

I dtús na seacaidí thosaigh sé ag canadh le Cabaret Gael-Linn agus cuireadh in aithne é do Sheán Ó Riada. Thaitin a ghuth leis an Riadach agus dheineadar an céirnín “ An Poc ar Buile”, amhrán a scríobh Dónal O Mulláin,  ó Chúil Aodha.

Céirníní eile  atá déanta leis an Riadach –  “ The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee” “ Bhí Bean Uasal” agus “ Taimse im’ Chodladh.

Bhí sé páirteach le Seán agus Ceoltóirí Chualann san sraith cláracha “Fleadh Cheoil an Radio”. Bhíodar beirt ar an stáitse in Amharclann an Gaiety ar an oíche stairiúil úd as a dtainigh an céirnín “ Ó Riada sa Gaiety”, atá ar fáil ar dhlúthdhiosca anois.

Taréis bháis Sheáin Ui Riada lean Seán air ag canadh. Dhein sé céirníní le daoine mar Donal Lunny, Dermot Ó’Brien, Cathal Dunne agus Peadar Ó Riada. Bhí ceangal aige le Comhaltas mar amhranaí ag coirmeacha  ar fuaid na tíre agus thar lear I Sasana.

Sa bhliain 2005 dhein sé a chéad camchuaird le Macalla na hÉireann go dtí na Stáit Aontaithe agus  thaisteal sé le Comhaltas go Moscó, Shanghai agus Havanna.

Gach Luan tugann sé aghaidh ar Chúil-Aodha ag taifeadadh amhráin le Peadar O Riada. Tá breis agus trí scór amhrán ar théip acu agus tá sé beartaithe acu iad a eisiúínt ar dhlúth dhiosca go luath.

Tá cónaí ar Sheán Ó Sé agus a bhean Eibhlín I gcathair Chorcaí.

Tuilleadh eolas faoin gcuid eile de na ceardlanna agus conas áit a chur in áirithe le fáil anseo.

Séan Ó Sé was born in Ballylickey West Cork in January 1936. Both his parents were Teachers and he was raised through the medium of Irish. His father was a fine singer and his uncle sang sean-nós.

He qualified as a teacher and took singing lessons with John T Horne ,who taught him how to use and conserve his voice. He began to sing with Cabaret Gael Linn in the 60’s and was introduced to Seán Ó Riada. Ó Riada liked his voice and they recorded the record “An Poc ar buile” which was written by Dónal Ó Mulláin from Cúil Aodha. Other recordings made with Ó Riada include “ The Banks of my Own Lovely Lee”, “Bhí Bean Uasal” and “ Táimse Im Chodladh”.

Her also took part in the series of programmes “ Fleadh Cheoil an Riadaigh” with Seán and Ceoltóiri Chualann. They were both on stage at the historic concert in  The Gaiety Theatre from which the “ Ó Riada sa Gaiety” recording originated.

After Seán Ó Riada’s death he continued singing and made recordings with Donal Lunny, Dermot O Brien, Cathal Dunne and Peadar O Riada. He also sang at Comahaltas concerts all around Ireland and in England. In 2005 he toured with Macalla na hÉireann in the United States and travelled with Comhaltas to Moscow, Shanghai and Havanna.

He visits Cúil Aodha every Monday night and records songs with Peadar Ó Riada. They have recorded over 60 songs and hope to release them on CD soon.

He lives in Cork with his wife Eibhlin.

Rugadh agus tógadh Cárthach Mac Craith I Rinn ó gCuanach I nDéisibh Mumhan.

Tá Cárthach ag amhrán ó bhí sé ina gharsúin óg agus thug leis an traidisíuin ársa amhránaíochta  a áite dhúchais.

Bhí sé ar an gcéad amhránai ag an ngrúpa Danú  agus tá sé ina bhall de Chór Fear na nDéise.

Tá a chuid amhránaiochta le cloisint ar dhlúthdhioscaí na ngrúpai sin agus ar a dhlúthdhiosca aonarach An Tobar Séimh, a sheol sé in 2018.

Tuilleadh eolas faoin gcuid eile de na ceardlanna agus conas áit a chur in áirithe le fáil anseo.

Cárthach mac Craith was born and reared in the  Ring  Gaeltacht in County Waterford.

Cárthach has been singing since he was a young child and is steeped in the rich traditional singing of his native home.

He was the lead singer with the group Danú and is a member of Cór Fear na nDéise. His singing can be heard on  the cd’s of those groups and can be heard also on his won solo cd An Tobar Séimh.
