Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin will go ahead again this year on-line from the Múscraí Gaeltacht of Co. Cork on Saturday 05 and Sunday 06 December 2020.
This will be the twenty-ninth annual music festival and commemoration of the life and singing of the singer Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin from Cúil Aodha in the Múscraí Gaeltacht who died in 1991. Diarmuidín was a highly respected singer, celebrated for his unique ability to make his own of the songs. Recognized both locally and nationally for his extensive repertoire of songs; songs and a style of singing that came straight from the heart of the Múscraí sean nós tradition, as well as from across the county bounds from the parish of Kilgarvan, in Co. Kerry – Diarmuid had a rich store of Irish songs, English songs and bilingual or Macaronic songs.
Every year since 1992 singers, musicians and lovers of the best of Irish traditional singing and music have descended upon the Muscraí Gaeltacht villages of Cúil Aodha and Baile Bhuirne from all over Ireland, and indeed beyond, to enjoy the singing, music and good company.
This year with restrictions on travel and assembly on us all, we are not in a position to have a ‘normal’ 29th Éigse but we are determined to have an Éigse on-line. This will also keep a clear path available to us to have and celebrate a special Éigse next year, a 30th Éigse, in 2021.
Doireann Ní Ghlacáin will again perform the duties of Bean an Tí for the Digital Concert which will be broadcast on-line at 21:00 – 22:30 on Saturday 05 December. On Sunday morning the Seán Ó Riada mass will be broadcast live from the church in Cúil Aodha on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta (94.4 FM on radio or on-line at https://www.rte.ie/rnag). The Éigse will continue with another on-line event at 12:00.
Éigse Recitals from the atmospheric Old Protestant Church building at Saint Gobnait’s cemetery in Baile Bhuirne have become a much-loved feature of the festival. Specially selected material from the Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin Archive of these Recitals in recent years will make up this event on Sunday 06 December which will go out on-line at midday.
All information and links to the gala on-line concert and other on-line events of this Éigse will be posted on the festival website www.eigse.ie. Follow us on social media in the coming weeks as we post regular updates and information on the fantastic singers and musicians lined up for our digital concert.
A warm welcome awaits you on-line at Éigse Dhiarmuid Uí Shúilleabháin 2020.
Beidh an t-ádh le daltaí amhránaíochta i mbliana mar go mbeidh rogha acu idir dhá mhúinteoir amhránaíochta den chéadscoth. Beidh Rita Gallaghaer ó Na Frosa, Co. Dhún na nGall, i mbun ceardlainne amhránaíochta i mBéarla agus beidh Treasa Ní Mhiolláin, as Árann Mór, Oileáin Árainn, Co. na Gaillimhe, i bhfeidhil ceardlainne amhránaíochta as Gaeilge ar an sean-nós.
RITA GALLAGHER
Na Frosa in iar-dheisceart chontae Dhún na nGall is áit dhúchais do Rita ach tá cónaí anois uirthi ag Na Crosbhealaí in oirthear an chontae agus tá baint mhór aici leis an amhránaíocht thraidisiúnta i mBéarla ó bhí sí sna ficheadaí luaithe. Bhuaigh sí Fleadh Cheoil Uile Éireann trí huair ó shin.
Ba mhór an onóir do Rita é nuair a bhronn TG4 Gradam Ceoil Amhránaí na Bliana uirthi sa bhliain 2017. Ar an scata mór amhránaithe a raibh tionchar ag a gcuid amhránaíochta uirthi áiríonn sí go hard Paddy Tunney a thug ‘Gealbhan na Cruaiche Goirme’ uirthi, tagairt dá háit dúchais ar ndóigh.
Originally from near Frosses in south-west Donegal, Rita Gallagher now lives in Crossroads in east Donegal, and has been involved in traditional singing in English since her early 20’s, going on to win the prestigious All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil competition three times.
Rita was honoured to be the 2017 recipient of Gradam Ceoil Amhránaí na Bliana from TG4. Among her many influences is the late Paddy Tunney, who called her “The Linnet of the Bluestacks”, a reference to the locality of her birth.
TREASA NÍ MHIOLLÁIN
Ó dheireadh na 1960í anuas, tá Treasa Ní Mhiolláin ina ceannródaí i measc amhránaithe agus ceoltóirí Árann.
Bhuaigh sí an chéad Chorn Uí Riada ariamh ag Oireachtas na Gaeilge i 1972, comórtas a bhuaigh sí arís eile i 1979. I measc na ngradaim eile a bronnadh uirthi, tá: Comórtas na mBan faoi dhó, trí chraobh ag Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, trí chraobh ag Fleadh Cheoil na Breataine, Gradam Shean-nós Cois Life agus mórán eile gradam.
Le beagnach 35 bliain, tá sí ag teagasc na hamhránaíochta in Oileáin Árann agus i bhfad i gcéin.
Since the late 1960’s Treasa Ní Mhiolláin has been a frontrunner amongst the singers and musicians of the Aran Islands.
Treasa won the first ever Corn Uí Riada at Oireachtas na Gaeilge in the year 1972 and won it again in the year 1979. Amongst her other achievements are Comórtas na mBan on two occasions, the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann title three times, Fleadh Cheoil na Breataine title three times, Gradam Shean-nós Cois Life and many more.
She has taught singing on the Aran Islands, as well many other places, for the best part of the last 35 years.
